Privacy Policy

Waypoint ("we," "our," or "the app") is a flight logging and social aviation app for iOS. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your choices.


Information We Collect


Account Information
When you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your name and email address for authentication purposes. We do not access your Google or Apple account passwords.


Flight Data
The app records flight information including departure and arrival airports, flight duration, distance, altitude, aircraft tail number, and optional notes or journal entries you write. If you import flights from FlightAware, we send your aircraft tail number to FlightAware's API to retrieve your flight history.


Location Data
During active flight tracking, Waypoint collects GPS coordinates (latitude, longitude, altitude, speed) approximately every 5 seconds. Location data is collected only while you are actively recording a flight. Background location is used so tracking continues if you switch apps mid-flight. We do not track your location outside of active flight recording sessions.


Photos
You may attach photos to flights or upload a profile photo. Photos are stored locally on your device. Photo file references (not the images themselves) may be synced to our cloud service.


Contacts
If you choose to find friends on Waypoint, we access your phone contacts with your permission. Phone numbers are hashed (SHA-256) on your device before being sent to our server. We never see or store your actual contact phone numbers.


Profile Information
You may provide your display name, home airport, and pilot certificate type. This information is visible to other Waypoint users if you use social features.


How We Use Your Data

  • To provide core app functionality: logging flights, tracking progress, and displaying your logbook

  • To sync your flight data across devices via our cloud service

  • To enable social features: following other pilots, joining clubs, liking and commenting on flights

  • To retrieve weather data (METARs) for airports you visit

  • To look up airport information for display in the app


Third-Party Services

  • Supabase — Cloud database for account data, flight records, and social features

  • FlightAware AeroAPI — Flight history lookup using aircraft tail numbers

  • Aviation Weather (aviationweather.gov) — Airport weather conditions

  • Google Sign-In / Apple Sign-In — Authentication only

We do not use any analytics, advertising, or crash reporting SDKs. We do not sell your data to third parties.


Data Storage

Flight data, photos, and preferences are stored locally on your device. When you are signed in, flight records, aircraft, and profile information are synced to our cloud database hosted by Supabase. Photos remain on your device only.


Data Retention and Deletion

You can delete individual flights at any time from within the app. To delete your account and all associated data, go to Profile > Settings > Delete Account. This removes your data from both your device and our cloud service.


Children's Privacy

Waypoint is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.


Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes through the app or by updating the date at the top of this page.
